To work as a freelance interpreter you should meet the following criteria:

excellent proficiency in your first language
very good English proficiency across a broad range of registers
excellent public speaking skills
tertiary education is preferable
post-graduate training in languages, translation and interpreting is preferable
at least 100 hours/20 days of simultaneous interpreting experience or
at least 100 hours/20 days of consecutive interpreting experience
accreditation with the SA Translators’ Institute is a recommendation
